Dear All,

I am writing to announce that Yurika Wakamatsu, PhD candidate at Harvard University, was selected as the winner of the 2015 Chino Kaori Memorial Essay Prize for an essay titled “Feminizing Art in Modern Japan: Noguchi Shōhin (1847-1917) and the Changing Conceptions of Art and Womanhood.” Congratulations Yurika!

There were many strong submissions this year and I thank all those who participated. I encourage everyone to consider submitting to next year’s competition, which will have a submission deadline around the same time as this year’s was.

You can read abstracts from the winners in this and previous years on our website: https://jahf.net/chinokaori. The Chino Kaori Memorial Essay Prize was established by the Japan Art History Forum in 2003 in memory of distinguished colleague Chino Kaori, and is awarded annually to the best research paper written in English on a Japanese art history topic.

Many thanks again to all those who participated this year and congratulations to Yurika.

All best wishes,
Justin Jesty
